Elon Musk has announced swift measures to enhance the political neutrality of his AI chatbot, Grok, following observations that it expressed political sentiments akin to ChatGPT. Musk’s response came after research scientist David Rozado shared a Friday X post, highlighting that both chatbots exhibited similar left-leaning and libertarian political positions, as per the Political Compass Test.

According to Rozado, the test results indicated that both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok leaned left and libertarian, with Grok appearing further to the left in his evaluation. Musk acknowledged the perceived exaggeration in the chart but assured immediate steps to reposition Grok towards political neutrality.

Expressing skepticism about the accuracy of the Political Compass Test, Musk criticized certain questions for lacking nuance and being outright ridiculous. Nevertheless, he affirmed the commitment to realign Grok to a more politically neutral stance.

In a subsequent response, Rozado mentioned receiving inquiries from xAI’s Igor Babuschkin, showcasing genuine interest in improving Grok’s methodology. Musk swiftly announced plans to enhance Grok’s political neutrality, earning praise for xAI’s dedicated team.

Musk’s company, xAI, introduced Grok to premium X users on Friday, emphasizing its beta stage and continuous improvement. xAI’s mission centers on advancing collective understanding, with Musk aiming to raise up to $1 billion for the startup.

Addressing Grok’s politics, xAI’s website emphasizes designing AI tools that cater to people of diverse backgrounds and political views. Musk, in the past, criticized ChatGPT as being too “woke,” emphasizing the potential dangers of training AI to be overly politically aligned.
