IndiGo announced that in 2023, it made history by becoming the first Indian airline to conduct over 2,000 flights per day.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, accomplished a significant milestone in 2023 by transporting 100 million passengers, placing it among a select global group of carriers. This achievement marks a distinction as only a few airlines worldwide have surpassed 100 million passengers in a calendar year, with IndiGo being the first Indian airline to achieve this feat.

“In the calendar year 2022, the airline welcomed 78 million passengers on board, slightly exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels. IndiGo has further distinguished itself by becoming the first airline in India to operate over 2,000 flights a day. Presently, IndiGo serves 118 destinations, including 32 international destinations,” stated the airline in an official announcement.

IndiGo holds the position of India’s largest airline in both the domestic and international sectors. With a domestic market share of 61.8% in November, it significantly outpaces the distant second, Air India, by nearly six times. In the international segment, IndiGo commanded a market share of 18.5% from July to September among all airlines operating flights to and from India.

The airline is actively pursuing expansion initiatives, having placed the largest-ever aircraft order in history earlier in the year, involving 500 Airbus A320 family planes. Alongside existing orders, IndiGo’s total order now nears 1,000 planes, with deliveries extending into the next decade.

“Over the last six months, IndiGo has added more than 20 new international routes to its network while strengthening domestic connectivity. In the coming months, the airline plans to expand its network further by adding destinations such as Bali, Indonesia, and Medina, Saudi Arabia, all while ensuring growth in a financially and environmentally responsible manner,” highlighted IndiGo.

The mega aircraft order and rapid network expansion underscore IndiGo’s optimism regarding the growth potential of India’s aviation market, currently the third-largest globally and experiencing rapid expansion. IndiGo’s increased air passenger traffic aligns with the robust recovery witnessed by the Indian aviation sector post-pandemic.
